An Evening Concert with Mark Growden
Saturday, May 4th 7:30pm * $15
An evening of soulful songs by singer/multi-instrumentalist Mark Growden.
“Influenced by Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Igor Stravinsky, Claude Debussy, Aaron Copeland, John Coltrane, Townes Van Zandt and Alan Lomax’s field recordings of African- American prison work songs, Growden cooks his compositions from his own recipes. The taste is a little cabaret, a bit New Orleans brass, a pinch Appalachian folk with a spicy edge reminiscent of punk, grunge or metal but hard to pin down, stirred with the gentleness of trees whispering on an easy summer day.” – The Taos News
“Mark’s live performances are legendary for their combination of incredible musicianship and raw emotional honesty. Whether playing fiercely spirited bluegrass, or dark, impassioned songs of desire, the experience is unforgettable; an intense, alchemical communion, in which both audience and performer alike leave spent and exhilarated. Heart, soul, blood and bone, Mark is a true artist. Or, as another Bay Area musician succinctly put it, “he’s the best of us.”” – Laughing Squid
“Fiery, earthy and sublimely sensual.” – Comet Magazine
“An unusual and voracious talent.” – Willamette Week
“Theatrical, dark and sexy.” – West Coast Performer
A Community Sing Workshop with Mark Growden
Sunday, May 5th 1-3pm
Experience the soulfulness and joy of singing as a community in this inclusive 2 hour workshop with composer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Mark Growden. Come play, dance, and celebrate as we join our voices in song.
We will sing songs from various folk traditions from around the world, including gospel songs from the American South and South African part songs, as well as songs composed by Growden and other contemporary composers specifically to be sung by groups.
This class works on the “safety in numbers” principle. No one will have to sing solo in front of the class.
All levels of experience are welcome. People who may be hesitant about singing are particularly encouraged to attend. Dress comfortably, as we will be moving.
Space is limited for both events. Please sign up early by calling (530) 836-1500 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
