Restorative Yoga & Pranayama
Śraddhā: Faith and conviction // We will begin our weekend together with a deep and quiet practice… shedding the hustle of the week and the movement of travel. This evening session will be designed to help each of us feel fresh and refreshed – ready for a weekend of study, reflection, connection, and practice. Yoga outlines a series of qualities, or “yoga vitamins” that will help any student on the path of Yoga. The first of these is Śraddhā: faith and conviction. So we will practice with this quality at the forefront, and explore, in particular, how a quiet experience in our physical practice helps nourish a sense of faith in our hearts.
Saturday October 5th, 9am-12pm
Philosophy, Asana
Vīrya: Inner Strength and Courage // When we think of strength, we often think of muscles and force and sweat and labor. But the quality of Vīrya has little to do with physical feats – instead this is a quality of inner strength, the ability to turn toward our own discomfort in the hopes of increased growth and clarity. This morning session will include an in-depth philosophy teaching on the four qualities needed for an enduring yoga practice (Yoga Sutra 1.20), in addition to a proper asana class. Expect a focus on standing poses, hip work, and some twists.
Saturday October 5th, 3-6pm
Pranayama, Asana
Smrti: Retention and Reflection // Yoga practice is a tool that reconnects us with our Self. Through practice, we are reminded of our own optimal resonance. We become more gentle and also more decisive. In the midst of our daily demands, it’s not hard to become engulfed in endless task and small grievances. Yoga practices offer us each a chance to step back into the Big Picture. The third quality that Yoga encourages us to support in ourselves is a capacity for remembrance, reflection, and retention. This afternoon session will gradually build actions and concepts that work together to provide a stable foundation for a feeling of safety and freedom in backbends. In addition to backbends, expect some quiet unwinding and time for a grounding pranayama practice.
Sunday October 6th, 9-11:30am
Samādhiprajñā : Absorption and Insight // Through conviction, inner strength, and reflection, we create the groundwork for our own intuition to shine through. These qualities support our capacity to listen internally, both on the mat and off. Samādhiprajñā refers to the direct insight we gain when we are in a state of clarity… free from the muddling influences of ego, fear, old stories, projections, and so on. These insights are said to be the highest form of knowledge, as they arise from within and not from hearsay or external sources. This final session will provide an opportunity to integrate the teachings of the weekend, to reflect on how we can lovingly foster these qualities in ourselves, and to invite conditions for clarity and insight.

Amey Mathews’ classes are filled with metaphors, stories, humor, ample variations, and lots of encouragement to feel both safe and challenged. She began studying yoga as a student at Stanford University in 1993, and is always searching out ways to continue her yogic education. Amey is a great fan of the Iyengar method – and the creativity, versatility, rigor and playfulness that it affords her as both a practitioner and as a teacher. She has also studied the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali with Manorama, Gitte Bechsgaard, and Kausthub Desikachar, and teaches with an emphasis on including yoga philosophy and concepts alongside the postures. She has been a devoted student of Kofi Busia since 2000, and more recently also began studying with Christina Sell in 2013.
