Reverence and Resilience
Autumn Yoga Retreat with Amey Mathews
October 5-7, 2018
Friday 5-7:30pm
Restorative Yoga & Pranayama
Release yourself from the week, and welcome yourself into the present moment. This class will be designed to help you establish a gentle rapport with your body, quiet the mind, and balance the emotions. This calming work sets the stage for deeper work by clearing away layers of mental chatter, habitual perspective, and physical patterns. Expect gentle, grounding poses, calming pranayama, and a touch of yoga philosophy to set the mood for the rest of the weekend.
Philosophy, Meditation, Asana
Asana is a physical endeavor, but yoga as a holistic practice extends beyond the physical. Through yogic practices, we can enrich our emotional range, ignite our sense of curiosity, and increase our own self-awareness. This work helps us to build our own internal sense of reverence and resilience, as well as helps us to more sincerely experience joy, compassion, and healthy boundaries in our interactions with others. Expect a focus on standing poses, core work, and twisting poses — Â as well as a talk on the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, and a guided meditation.
Saturday 3-6pm
Pranayama, Asana
When we remember our own personal connection to reverence, we experience a sense of belonging that is both grounding and encouraging. This practice will explore the ways in which we can connect, or re-connect with our own inner compass — such that we might experience an intimate and personalized experience through asana. Expect an inquisitive investigation into supported poses, backbends, and quiet forward extension postures; ending with a grounding pranayama practice.
Sunday 9am-12:00pm
Integration, Asana, Meditation
Alignment grants us access to the vast range of qualities inside us. Different poses and practices each help us to know ourselves more fully, in different contexts and under different conditions. This final practice of the weekend will provide an opportunity to integrate the various poses and teachings, and to reflect again on how we can approach our practice as a tool for building reverence and resilience. Except a good solid all-around practice and a simple meditation practice.
Bonus: Sunday 1-3 pm Hiking Adventure!

Amey Mathews’ classes are filled with metaphors, stories, humor, ample variations, and lots of encouragement to feel both safe and challenged. Amey is a great fan of the Iyengar method – and the creativity, versatility, rigor and playfulness that it affords her as both a practitioner and as a teacher. She has studied the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali with Kausthub Desikachar, and teaches with an emphasis on including yoga philosophy and concepts alongside the postures. She has been a devoted student of Kofi Busia since 2000, and more recently also began studying with Christina Sell. Amey is one of the owners of Yoga Within studio in Aptos, CA.
