The Yoga of Refuge
Weekend Workshop with Kofi Busia
May 1-3, 2015
Everyone needs a Refuge. At some time or other, everyone needs to look inside them with respectful attention, and to become calm and centered. A long ago, we could all seek sanctuary for a year and a day, following which we would be freed from persecution, servitude, or whatever burden or quest had been placed upon us. Yoga masters remind us that while we may take refuge anywhere and with anyone, a place, person or activity can only truly be a refuge when it connects us to something which feels timeless and eternal: our inner self, our inner spirit, and our inner soul.
Krishna provided that refuge to Arjuna, in the ‘Gita’ as a refuge from the fear of wrongdoing. Krishna tells Arjuna that He is ‘the self hidden in the heart’. This weekend, we will practice yoga as an eternal conversation. We will find that dialogue between our individual and our higher selves. We will perform our asanas so we can establish contact with the inner wisdom of spirit. We will search for that creative presence at the heart of all reality, and that is the breath inside the breath. We put into practice that deepest piece of wisdom in the yogic tradition. It is our own bodies, in the subtle center. We can tune in to the true self: that part of us that has no fear nor any confusion our life’s purpose. That is the true refuge.
